Our History & Legacy

Established in 1948, Nilratan Sircar Medical College (NSMC) is named after the eminent physician and social reformer, Sir Nilratan Sircar. It stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical institutions in West Bengal, with a rich history of contributing to the healthcare landscape of Eastern India.

From its humble beginnings in a refurbished building, NSMC has grown into a sprawling 50-acre campus housing a 1500-bed tertiary care teaching hospital, state-of-the-art laboratories, modern lecture halls, and extensive student amenities. Our alumni network spans across the globe, holding key positions in healthcare, academia, and research.

The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India. We are committed to our founding principles of providing equitable, high-quality medical education and healthcare services to all sections of society.

Undergraduate (MBBS)

A 5.5-year program (including 1-year internship) with an annual intake of 200 students. The curriculum integrates basic sciences with clinical exposure from the first year. Emphasis is placed on community medicine and rural postings to prepare doctors for India's diverse healthcare needs.

The 1500-bed teaching hospital is the cornerstone of our clinical training and community service. It operates 24/7 providing tertiary care across all major specialties. Key features include:

  • Advanced Trauma Centre: A designated Level I trauma center with a dedicated helicopter pad and 24-hour emergency surgical services.
  • Cardiac Care Unit (CCU): Equipped with 50 monitored beds, two cardiac catheterization labs, and a dedicated cardiac surgery OT.
  • Oncology Wing: Featuring linear accelerators for radiotherapy, chemotherapy day care, and a specialized bone marrow transplant unit.
  • Modern Diagnostic Hub: Houses 3 Tesla MRI, 128-slice CT scan, digital mammography, and a fully automated pathology lab.

Key Research Thrust Areas

Our research is organized around interdisciplinary centers of excellence:

Major projects include surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns in Eastern India, development of rapid diagnostic kits for tropical fevers, and community-based interventions for tuberculosis control. Our team recently completed a WHO-funded study on dengue epidemiology in urban slums.

Annual Publications: 45-50 | Grant Funding (2023): ₹8.2 Crores

Focus on diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers prevalent in the Indian population. The "Kolkata Cancer Genomics Initiative" is mapping genetic variants associated with oral and cervical cancer. Our cardiology department leads a multi-center trial on a novel stent design.
